VIEWING/REPRESENTING
Key Concepts
Teaching viewing in Physical Education is perhaps one of the most important strategies. Through viewing, students have the opportunity to see others performing a particular skill, which is a valuable tool when teaching new skills (observational learning). Opportunities for viewing physical activity are unlimited - from seeing people walking to a bus stop to running for exercise to playing in a NHL hockey game, movement is everywhere. In sport, providing students with the opportunity to view themselves performing a specific skill is also an invaluable tool. Seeing themselves preform a layup in basketball, for example, can show students the error they are making in their form that you have tried endlessly to explain to them but with no success. Students can also have the opportunity to view sports literature through physical education - from reading sports plays or stats to game instructions. Without viewing, it would be very difficult to teach physical education.
With representing, students can then model the athletes they see on video and attempt to perform the skills themselves. Students can also create posters or boards of game plays or strategies or a biography of their favourite sports hero to share with the class.
Curriculum Connections
Viewing and representing are integral parts of contemporary life. These skills allow students to understand the ways in which images and language may be used to convey ideas, values and beliefs.
Viewing is an active process of attending to and comprehending such visual media as television, advertising images, films, diagrams, symbols, photographs, videos, drama, drawings, sculpture and paintings. Viewing enables students to acquire information and to appreciate the ideas and experiences of others. Many of the comprehension processes involved in reading, such as previewing, predicting and making inferences, may also be used in viewing.
Representing enables students to communicate information and ideas through a variety of media, such as video presentations, posters, diagrams, charts, symbols, visual art, drama, mime and models.

Strategies and Lesson Plan Ideas
Viewing Strategies:
- Diagrams illustrating strategy for a specific play or game.
- Gallery walks - each student make a poster representing a muscle or muscle group with stretches/exercises that can be done to work that muscle.
- Videos demonstrating proper skill execution.
- Videos of previously performed sport/activity and discussion afterwards of what was done well/can be improved.
- Peer to peer or teacher to student demonstrations of proper skill execution.
- Give students opportunities to view and discuss sporting events, drama and other physical activities.
- Students could model correct strategy during game play.
- Produce videos demonstrating skill execution/dance routines they mastered or created.
- Students could diagram game strategies or step by step execution of a movement.
- Students could demonstrate various skills to the class they have mastered and feel comfortable doing so.
