It is important to distinguish between assessment and evaluation. What is the difference?
Assessment - gathering information about student learning that informs our teaching and helps students learn more; resulting in us changing how we teach based on what we learn in our assessments. Is also called "assessment for learning or formative assessment; involves:
- checking to see what has been learned and what needs to be learned next
- accessing specific and descriptive feedback in relation to criteria that is focused on improvement
- involvement by the student in the assessment
- used to collect information that will inform the teacher's next teaching steps and the student's next learning steps
Evaluation - a process of reviewing the evidence and determining its value; also called assessment of learning or summative assessment; involves:
- telling the learner how he/she has performed as compared to others or to some standard
- considering the evidence and decide whether or not the students have learned what was needed, and how well they have learned it
- reporting using grades, numbers, checks or other symbols
